Classic Green Bean Casserole

Classic green bean casserole combines cut green beans with creamy mushroom soup and a crisp French-fried onion topping. It bakes until bubbling, then gets a final layer of onions that turns golden in the oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 can (14.5 oz) green beans cut, drained
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 0.125 tsp black pepper
  • 1.33 cup French-fried onions

Equipment

  • 1 1 1/2-quart casserole dish

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
  3. Stir together the green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and 2/3 cup of the French-fried onions in the casserole dish.
  4. Bake for 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling around the edges.
  5. Stir the casserole.
  6. Top with the remaining 2/3 cup French-fried onions.
  7. Bake for 5 minutes, until the onions are golden.

Notes

For the crispest topping, add the remaining onions only for the final bake. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days; freezing is not recommended because the creamy sauce and onions can lose their texture. For a dairy-free variation, use dairy-free cream of mushroom soup and unsweetened plant milk.
